Artist Bio:
Emma Chang is an Orlando-based artist currently pursuing a BFA in Studio Art at the University of Central Florida. Her practice centers on charcoal and graphite drawings, where the interplay of black and gray tones creates stark, dramatic lighting effects. While drawing is at the core of her work, she also explores three-dimensional expression through sculptural pieces in wood and steel, expanding her investigation of form, contrast, and material. Looking ahead, she aspires to bring her skills in detail, texture, and lighting to the theme park industry while also pursuing an MFA and a future in academia.
Artist Statement:
My work investigates the concept of surveillance through surreal, black-and-white self-portraiture. Using stark contrast in charcoal and graphite, I create imagery that evokes the tension between presence and anonymity, the observer and the observed. These works serve as meditations on how surveillance shapes identity, privacy, and self-perception. By placing myself as the subject within surreal environments, I attempt to grapple with the absurdity of human existence and the dissonance of being both watched and watching.
